Guest: Dr. Joel Myers, the Founder and Executive Chairman of AccuWeather. Dr. Myers is considered the father of modern commercial meteorology.
Overview: CEOs often feel like they’re making “life and death” business decisions. But, as we saw during the pandemic, when the safety of your customers and employees is at stake, CEOs need reliable data that will help them adapt to the facts on the ground quickly and lead decisively.
On today’s show, Dr. Joel Myers explains how technology, including AI and predictive analytics, is shaping the future of weather forecasting and how businesses can prepare to mitigate risks, protect their people, maintain efficiency, and keep Making BIG Happen.
Dr. Joel Myers on AccuWeather’s ICE:
“ Our culture here is around ICE: innovation, creativity, and entrepreneurship. That’s our philosophy and that’s ingrained in the culture and how people think and act. Constantly developing new products, new ideas, refreshing ourselves and our products, and being relevant and having people dedicated to our unique mission. There’s no other place like AccuWeather. We save lives, we make a difference. A lot of people think of weather forecasters and weather forecasting as more or less the same. Some people even think of it as a commodity. But at AccuWeather, it is far from a commodity. We’re more accurate. We have the statistics to show it. Our people believe in it and contribute to it. We’ve saved over 12,000 lives just due to what we’ve done here. And so it’s a unique place where you can contribute as a meteorologist or support our meteorological effort like nowhere else on the planet.”
Dr. Joel Myers on using AI to enhance AccuWeather’s value proposition:
“AI is just one of the components. AI takes a lot of data and is able to do things with more powerful computers and AI than you could before. But a lot of what you’re reading about what’s being done with AI and weather forecasting is a certain amount of hype. The most accurate weather forecasts are models based on physics and math that are run by supercomputers. The best results will be taking the models and the output and using AI on top of it. What combination of models are going to do the best job of predicting the high temperature in Cleveland ? And then bring in the skill of our meteorologist to make the most accurate forecast. That’s how AI will contribute and has been contributing and how we’ve been using it. But importantly, where AccuWeather stands out is we’re the most accurate. Superior accuracy is our model. That means that whoever is using it is going to make the best decision, and is more likely to be safer if the weather’s a threat. Part of what we do on top of that, which is at least as important, is communicate the weather effectively so people make the best decision, so companies make the best decision, which means they reduce losses, they save money, they reduce reputational harm, they keep people or their families safer.”
Dr. Joel Myers on weathering the storm and staying BIG for years to come:
“You have to be authentic. You have to communicate to the people that work for you. You have to be fair. You have to be a visionary, and you have to be open to ideas and be curious and encourage your workforce to be curious and challenge you or the leadership and have an open dialogue and discussion so that your company remains relevant, is progressing, and staying tuned to the environment around you. And be conscious of what’s right and always do what’s right.”
