What is Executive Coaching?

The term “coaching” has become very popular in today’s business management circles. Coaching involves a series of one-on-one interactions between an executive leader, manager, CEO or business owner and a dedicated external coach. The goal of coaching is to equip people with the knowledge and opportunities they need to grow their companies, develop themselves and become more effective leaders and communicators. Executive coaching usually focuses on work goals and issues.

There are many different kinds of coaching for business leaders:

At CEO Coaching International, We Specialize in Executive Coaching or CEO Coaching

Similar to business coaching, executive coaching focuses primarily on business growth. This type of coaching provides the top company leader(s) within an organization with tools, perspectives, networks, support, strategies and a lifetime of business experience at the CEO level to assist in rapid company improvement and leadership success.

CEO Coaching International helps drive out-sized growth through planning, execution, and accountability. We help build the business and the life CEOs dream about and assist in removing the challenges of getting there. Our coaches are highly-trained, battle-tested former CEOs, presidents, and founders who know their industry and practice a disciplined, yet flexible growth and leadership process with a proven methodology.

CEO Coaching as a Strategy for Savvy Business Leaders

Today, CEOs, family business owners, founders of companies, entrepreneurs and executive leaders are all under incredible pressure to perform and grow their companies. Markets continue to change quickly, as do technologies and entire industries. There is more regulatory pressure, shifting global disruptions, input from boards of directors and private equity partners and a modern workforce that is way different than before with new demands and expectations. At the same time, CEO tenures are a few years shorter than they were 20 years ago. In other words, CEOs are expected to achieve results quickly.

Pressure on CEOs to achieve goals and solve problems from day one is higher than it’s ever been.

In addition, trust in leaders is very low, with many employees assuming executives are only out for themselves. Combine these factors and you have a recipe for extreme executive challenge, leading to lost opportunities and earnings that don’t meet expectations. These are some of the problems that have led to a rise in executive coaching among the most powerful CEOs in the world.

The Relationship Between the Executive Coach and the CEO

The unique relationship between a leadership coach and an executive is unlike any other, and more companies recognize this and make executive coaching an important part of executive training and development. It’s an ongoing, trusted, one-on-one dynamic with an objective third party who is more intimate than a mentor, but not as personal as a therapist. This creates a new level of focus on performance that most executives and owners of businesses simply don’t get anywhere else. When CEOs believe that change in their organization would benefit either themselves or the executive team, CEO coaching is fast becoming the common resolution.

CEO Coaching is a New Advantage for Leaders

Executive coaching used to come with a negative stigma and was once seen as proof an executive wasn’t “qualified,”. Today’s CEO knows that to remain competitive, a dedicated CEO coach is part of the price of admission. Elite athletes retain coaches to remain at the top of their game. CEOs and executives should likewise enlist in executive coaching to sharpen specific skills and to build a foundation for solid decision-making.

How CEOs and Their Companies Benefit from Executive Coaching

CEO coaching offers a fresh perspective that doesn’t come from anywhere else: it’s objective, constructive, trusted, experienced, and personal enough to be able to see blind spots and offer honest feedback with no hidden agenda. CEO coaches also help as a “sounding board” for new ideas and strategies and changes in direction. CEO Coaches help develop sound strategies, ongoing planning, alignment and accountability. CEO Coaches can also provide a confidential listening ear for the leader who needs a safe place to “vent.” Ultimately, executive coaching helps leaders grow their organization and move into bigger roles more successfully and less painfully. Executive coaching is about developing and sustaining leadership excellence at the CEO level.

What CEO Coaching Is Not

An Executive Coach is NOT a Consultant.
This is perhaps the most common misconception about coaching. Consultants use their specialized knowledge to assess a situation and make specific recommendations. They provide solutions to problems. Coaching is a partnership between equals. Coaches do not tell people what to do. Coaches are guides and catalysts — they use their expertise to help you assess and change desired behaviors and habits to achieve your goals.

An Executive Coach is NOT a Trainer or a Teacher.
The teacher/student relationship is usually one-way. Teachers and trainers have knowledge and information that they pass to their students through a set curriculum or planned agenda. The executive coach is focused on working towards the best future for each CEO and their organization. It involves input and feedback from the CEO. The CEO coaching relationship is focused on specific goals, tasks, problems and issues that the CEO brings to the table like improving strategy, building culture, driving towards an exit, making important connections or just improving communication and leadership skills.

Executive Coach also is NOT a Therapist.
While coaches work with clients at a very personal level, therapy diagnoses, heals, addresses trauma, and deals with personal psychology. Coaches work with executives who are fundamentally healthy, whole, and able to manage their own well-being throughout a rigorous process of self-assessment and change.
