If you look at CEOs who have built high-growth companies, it’s clear that they share some of the same characteristics that contribute to effective leadership – across industries, across countries, across continents. The CEOs who are truly top performers always seem to focus on five important things:

VISION: Know What You Want
The CEO is responsible for the vision of the company. They should drive the answer to the question, “Where are we going?” It is a question that calls for clarity, painstaking communication, and dedication to aligning your company culture to your vision.

CASH: Know Your Numbers
At the end of the day, the CEO is ultimately responsible to ensure the company has enough cash to achieve its plans. The CEO should be thoroughly aware of the numbers, the key indicators, and should review monthly cash flow statements, a daily cash report, and a monthly projection.

PEOPLE: Build the Best Team Possible
The CEO’s job is to ensure we have the right people in the right jobs. Creating an environment that will attract the kind of talent needed to pursue and execute on the vision is also critical.

KEY RELATIONSHIPS: Own Them
The CEO is ultimately responsible for the key relationships in the company. Key relationships are the ones that matter most and would be a big blow to the company if they went away.

LEARNING: Stay Relevant
CEOs must continue to sharpen their game. They should devote time to the pursuit of learning what is happening in their industry and related industries. We live in a world in which innovations come so fast that it is hard to keep up. But we must keep up. For businesses, it’s a matter of survival.
